THE JOHNNY A. TRIO · Featuring Marty Richards (drums) & Dean Cassell (bass)

The name Johnny A. is spoken with reverence among guitarists and music fans alike — and it’s synonymous with tone, taste, and musical authority.

Johnny A.’s passion ignited at age thirteen after seeing The Beatles live in Boston, followed two years later by witnessing Jimi Hendrix in person — a life-altering moment that set him on a singular musical path.  Immersing himself in the sounds of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, Johnny quickly developed a voice on the instrument that was unmistakably his own.

By the 1970s, Johnny A. was forming bands throughout New England and drawing the attention of legendary musicians, including Bobby Whitlock of Derek and the Dominos and Doug Clifford of Creedence Clearwater Revival.  He later became Music Director for Peter Wolf, front-man of the J. Geils Band, coordinating live arrangements, touring extensively, and co-producing Wolf’s 1996 album Long Line.  In 2015, Johnny A. was invited to join The Yardbirds as their lead guitarist — a rare honor that cemented his place in guitar history.

At the heart of The Johnny A. Trio is a masterclass in musical chemistry.  On drums is Marty Richards, a powerhouse known for his deep groove and musical precision, best recognized for his work with The J. Geils Band and countless blues and rock icons.  On bass is Dean Cassell, whose melodic sensibility and rock-solid foundation have made him a sought-after collaborator across blues, jazz, and roots music.  Together, the trio delivers a dynamic, genre-defying live experience — equal parts fire, finesse, and feel.

Johnny A.’s acclaimed solo career spans multiple full-length albums and has earned him a GRAMMY® Award nomination, Boston Music Awards “Blues Artist of the Year”, and induction into the Boston Music Hall of Fame.  A true stylist without boundaries, Johnny effortlessly weaves jazz, blues, soul, and rock into a sound that is both accessible and sophisticated.

A Fender Custom, Gibson Custom, and Epiphone Signature Artist, Johnny A. has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, with major festival appearances including Fuji Rock (Japan), Leverkusen Jazztage (Germany), Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and SFJAZZ.

As the London Free Press puts it, Johnny A. is

“a musician who resists easy categorization — and that’s always cool by us.”

JAZZIZ Magazine adds:

“Johnny A. has an eclectic musical vision and the skills to realize it… His music is both accessible and sophisticated.”
